The story of the Wooly Wannabe does not start “Once upon a time” or “In a far away land”. No, this story starts not that long ago or that far away at all.  There was a boy named Douglas, his neighbor and best friend Elizabeth, and his dog Jake.  They lived in a town just north of New York City, up the Hudson River.

Douglas was nine years old, the youngest member of a large family that included his parents, as well as two sisters and two brothers.  To Douglas, it seemed that his parents were very busy with things like grocery shopping and balancing the checkbook.  He spent most of his time outside playing with Jake and Elizabeth.  His mother would often say, “Douglas, have fun and stay out of trouble, but be very careful.  You never know what you might come across when you’re outside playing.”

Douglas and Elizabeth became fast friends about three years ago when she moved to his town from Wisconsin.  The same age as Douglas, she was an only child and lived in the house across the street from his house.  Her mom and dad both worked, and sometimes Elizabeth would spend time at his house, with his mother or big sister looking after her when her parents were working or busy.  When she first moved into the house, Douglas would sometimes tease her about how she said certain words, but then he realized it was just because she used to live in a different part of the country.  It didn’t matter though.  He quickly learned that she was the coolest kid in his town, and maybe the coolest girl in the world.

One sunny Saturday in April, Douglas and Elizabeth were sitting on the girl’s back porch talking.  Jake was resting at their feet and chewing on an old tennis ball.  The dog was a four year old brown Labrador Retriever, or what some people called a “Chocolate Lab”.  Douglas and his friends thought Jake was the best dog in the world.

Elizabeth was getting ready to go with her parents to visit her Grandmother for the day and she asked, “Douglas, what do you think you’ll do all day while I’m gone?”

Douglas said he needed to explore his favorite spot—Harvey’s Woods.  To most adults, Harvey’s Woods appeared to be a small forest behind the Harvey Brothers tire shop.  To Douglas it was so much more.  In the woods there were fallen trees for crossing streams and eluding bandits, abandoned old tree forts for secret royal meetings, and big Xs painted in yet-to-be-found locations hiding spectacular treasures.  Today he imagined the woods were owned by the Noble King Harvey, ruler of all the lands.
